GPC3 (Glypican 3) is a protein coding gene that consists of a membrane associated protein core that is replaced by a variable number of heparan sulfate chains on the cell surface. Its related pathways include chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate metabolism and EXT2 deficiency leading to exostosis 2. An important homolog of this gene is GPC5, which positively regulates the classical Wnt signaling pathway by binding to the Wnt receptor Frizzled and stimulating the binding of Frizzled receptors to Wnt ligands. Members of the glypican associated integrated membrane proteoglycan family (GRIPS) include a core protein anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage. These proteins may play a role in controlling cell division and regulating growth.
